Academics

Joining a sorority in college is a life-changing experience, but garnering an education is the top priority for Kappa. This is why each chapter is expected to maintain academic standards equal to or higher than their university’s or college’s all-sorority GPA. We don’t ask individual members to maintain a certain GPA due to the variances in course loads, but each member is expected to contribute to the overall GPA of the chapter.

If a Kappa struggles academically, we help her through it. The Academic Excellence Committee meets with her to craft an improvement plan using study tactics and time management. We want each sister to leave college with what they came for: a degree.

Joining a sorority in college is a life-changing experience, but garnering an education and focus on academics is the top priority for Kappa. Each chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma is expected to maintain academic standards equal to or higher than their University’s all-sorority GPA. All members are asked to strive for their highest level of academic achievement and best GPA to contribute to the overall chapter GPA. However, we understand there are variations in course load and difficulty as well as external factors that make it so some quarters are harder than others.

If a Kappa is struggling in her courses or with navigating UCSB altogether, the chapter is there to support her. We have an Academic Excellence Committee in place to work together to create a plan to boost her GPA using personal advice, directing her to campus resources, crafting study plans, practicing time management, or just providing support. We want each sister to leave college with what they came for: a degree.

The resources provided by our chapter and Panhellenic organizations overall makes it so that the all-sorority GPA is consistently higher each quarter than the all-women GPA. This is possible through the presence of the Academic excellence committee with representatives from grade level, ensuring all members have someone in their year and a similar academic position to connect with. We also have Kappa Mentors, a comprehensive list of upperclassman from a variety of majors available for members to connect with for advice in specific courses, schedule planning, extracurriculars, or even jobs and housing. We host study hours and provide incentives for girls receiving high grades on exams.

Members who receive a 4.0 at the end of a quarter are gifted an academic pearl dangle to hang from their KKG key pin. This allows the women who go above and beyond academically to be accredited for their hard work. Members who receive a 4.0 as well as members who received a high grade on a challenging assignment are recognized during meeting.

UCSB is a distinguished school and with this comes academic challenges. Our main goal is to support all Kappas with the support and means necessary to succeed in their chosen major and career field. We place a high importance on our academics and we want all our members to succeed throughout their undergraduate career and to foster a community of KKGeniuses.
