Chapter Recruitment
Hii! I’m Gabi, Vice President of Membership for Kappa Kappa Gamma.
Going Kappa my freshman year completely transformed my time at UCSB. Through our chapter, I found a community of friends that made everything lighter and more exciting. I developed a sense of belonging that never left, which made me even more sure that Kappa was the right choice for me.
From my very first round of recruitment, I remember how natural everything felt. There is no denying how intimidating this process can feel, no matter what role you are playing. As an international student who could barely remember the Greek letters, it was a relief to walk into KKG and just be myself. There was no script, I wasn’t focused on saying the right thing or presenting a certain version of myself. I felt comfortable to just carry a conversation as I would with a roommate, and in getting to genuinely know the girls, I was drawn in. Three years later, as I walk into Monday night dinner, I still feel the same way.
It is an honor to lead a chapter that not only encourages its members to be their best selves, but gives them the space and comfort to do so. Whether it is by starting a new book club, giving a sister shoutout, or even bringing sweets for everyone to try, KKG has always been a place that uplifts its members and community.
Joining a sorority is a choice that extends well beyond our four years in Isla Vista. I will carry with me the warmth of having friends do my hair for date party, or lend me clothes when I didn’t love what I was wearing. To this day, I do my laundry exactly as my roommate taught me, and my kids will be eating banana bread made with my little’s recipe. The memories I made and the lessons I learned in Kappa are a part of who I am.
Serving as VPM has made that even more meaningful. At heart, recruitment is about finding the place where you feel you belong. Watching new members walk into our house nervous, but leaving with a smile on their faces reminds me of why I went Kappa. This chapter has been there for me at my lowest moments and to celebrate the happiest ones, and I would choose it again in a heartbeat.
Loyally,
Gabi Baez
